One of our current read-alouds is The Peterkin Papers by Lucretia P. Hale. This is just pure, unadulterated silliness, and it makes me laugh out loud, especially when I, um, “get” it a little too well. This is the first sentence from the story (chapter?) entitled “The Peterkins’ Summer Journey”:
In fact, it was their last summer’s journey,–for it had been planned then; but there had been so many difficulties it had been delayed.
Having just returned on Monday from a very short road trip, I can relate.
**If you’re reading via a subscription, the title of this post probably says “Bonhoeffer (yes, again).” I planned to quote from Bonhoeffer (yes, again), but obviously I changed my mind.
