We purchased a copy of her book and she autographed it for us. She addressed her note to Lulu and Louise, but she added a post-script for the DLM. Hmmm. I wonder how we’ll ever divvy up all these books when the time comes?
The little doll she’s holding in the photo below is one given to her by a teacher whose classroom she visited. After reading Leaving Gee’s Bend, the teacher had given the handmade doll an eyepatch like Ludelphia wears in the story. Ms. Latham said that the teacher wanted her to have the doll–a family heirloom. What a thoughtful and generous gift!
This makes our second author sighting of the year! (You can read about our first one here.) I’m proud to say that Irene Latham hails from my home state of Alabama, and I’m so glad to say that I’ve met her. I look forward to reading her next book!
